Green Waste Skip Bins
Green Waste Skip Bins in Adelaide
Garden waste is the one thing in a skip bin that doesn’t go to landfill. Prunings, leaves, clippings and branches get mulched or composted, and the disposal costs a fraction of what general waste does.
Which means if you keep the load clean, you pay less. A green waste skip bin in Adelaide is the cheapest bin we hire out – but only if what’s inside it is genuinely just garden.
Why a green waste skip bin costs less
Mixed waste has to be tipped, sorted and split between recycling and landfill, and the landfill portion carries a levy. Clean green organics skip that entirely. It’s weighed, tipped at a composting facility, and turned into mulch.
That’s a real cost difference, and it gets passed on. Depending on size, a clean green load runs roughly $50 cheaper than the same bin filled with mixed household rubbish.
The catch is that “clean” means clean. One plastic pot, one length of treated pine, one bag of potting mix still in the bag, and the load gets reclassified as general waste at the gate – at general waste prices. It’s worth being fussy for ten minutes while you load.
What goes in a green waste skip bin
Lawn clippings and leaves
Hedge trimmings and prunings
Branches and small logs (see diameter limits below)
Weeds, including roots
Palm fronds
Bark, mulch and loose garden debris
Small shrubs and root balls with the dirt knocked off
What doesn't
Plastic - pots, seedling trays, bags, weed matting, irrigation fittings, hose
Treated timber - sleepers, decking, fence palings, pallets, anything painted or CCA-treated
Soil, sand, rubble and rocks - these are hard fill and need a different bin
Turf and lawn rolls
Wire, star pickets, mesh, tools
Fertiliser and chemical containers
Rubbish that's simply been thrown on the pile - bottles, cans, the roll of old carpet
If your pile is genuinely mixed and separating it isn’t realistic, don’t force it. Book a general waste bin instead and we’ll price it properly rather than pretending.
Garden waste removal in Adelaide: when the council bin isn't enough
A 240L green organics bin holds about a wheelbarrow and a half. That’s fine for weekly clippings. It’s useless for:
Autumn leaf drop
in the older eastern suburbs - Burnside, Norwood, Unley, Walkerville. Plane trees and liquidambars put down more in six weeks than a council bin takes in six months.
A serious prune
One overgrown bougainvillea or a row of neglected conifers will fill 4m³ without much trouble.
Buying a place that's been let go
Two years of no maintenance is a 6m³ to 9m³ job, not a green bin job.
Storm cleanup
Winter fronts across the eastern suburbs bring branches down in quantity.
What size do you need?
Bin size | Roughly | Typical garden job |
2m³ | 8 wheelie bins | Seasonal tidy-up, one big hedge |
3m³ | 12 wheelie bins | Full yard prune, leaf clearance |
4m³ | 16 wheelie bins | Overgrown backyard, several shrubs out |
6m³ | 24 wheelie bins | Small tree removal, bushfire clearing |
9m³ | 32–36 wheelie bins | Large tree, whole-property clear |
Green waste is bulky but it compacts, so people tend to overestimate the size they need – the opposite of general waste. If you’re between two, ring us and describe the pile.
Four things that make it cheaper
Let it dry out first
Freshly cut grass and green branches hold a lot of water, and you're charged by weight. A week under cover can meaningfully cut the tonnage.
Cut branches to length
Long limbs bridge across the bin and leave a metre of dead air underneath. Cut them down and you'll fit close to twice as much.
Load heavy and low
Logs and thick stems across the base, leaves and clippings on top. Level with the rim - anything above it won't be collected.
Empty the pots before they go near the bin
The single most common contaminant, and the easiest to avoid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a green waste bin actually cheaper?
Yes – roughly $50 cheaper than general waste for the same size, because it’s composted rather than landfilled. Full comparison on our skip bin prices page.
What if a bit of rubbish ends up in there?
A stray item or two we can usually pull out. A genuinely mixed load gets charged as general waste, and we’ll let you know before we invoice rather than after.
Can I put soil in with the garden waste?
No. Soil, rubble and rocks are hard fill and need a separate bin. Knock the dirt off root balls before they go in.
How long do I get the bin?
Seven days as standard.
Can you deliver today?
Often, yes – see same day skip bin hire for cutoff times.
