Household Rubbish Removal
Household Rubbish Removal in Adelaide
Most house clean-ups start the same way. You open the shed door, look at fifteen years of accumulation, and shut it again.
The job isn’t complicated. It’s just bigger than a car boot and bigger than the fortnightly bin, and at some point you need somewhere to put it all. That’s what a skip bin is for – a week on the driveway, fill it at your own pace, and it disappears.
What size bin for a house clean up?
The honest answer is that almost everyone underestimates. Furniture doesn’t compact, and a room that looks like “a couple of trailer loads” rarely is.
Bin size | Roughly | What it handles |
3m³ | 12 wheelie bins | A garage or one full shed |
4m³ | 16 wheelie bins | A one-bedroom unit, or a solid declutter |
6m³ | 24 wheelie bins | A two to three bedroom house |
9m³ | 32–36 wheelie bins | A family home with a shed and a garage |
A second bin costs far more than sizing up once. If you’re genuinely torn between two, take the bigger one – and if you finish under, you haven’t lost much.
Not sure? Ring us and describe the house. Number of bedrooms, whether there’s a shed, and whether anyone’s been living there recently gets us close enough.
What goes in a household bin
Standard general waste covers most of what comes out of a home:
Furniture - lounges, tables, bed frames, wardrobes, bookshelves
Clothing, linen, curtains, bedding
Carpet and underlay, vinyl, floor rugs
Boxes, paper, books, magazines
Kitchenware, crockery, small appliances
Toys, sporting gear, bikes
Broken plastic goods and general junk
Items that carry a surcharge
These are accepted, but they cost extra to dispose of and need to be declared when you book:
Item | Why | Surcharge |
Mattresses | Stripped and processed separately | $75 each |
Tyres | Separate disposal pathway | $35 each |
Tell us about these upfront and they’re priced in. Bury a mattress at the bottom of the bin and hope, and it comes back as a variation on your invoice – which nobody enjoys.
What can't go in
Most people can only clear out a garage on a Saturday, so weekend skip bin hire in Adelaide is worth planning around rather than leaving to chance.
Paint, solvents, oils, pool chemicals, pesticides - take these to a household hazardous waste drop-off.
Asbestos - needs a specialised wrapped bin and licensed disposal. Common in Adelaide homes built before the late 1980s, particularly in eaves, fences and bathroom sheeting. If you think you've found some, stop and ring us.
Gas bottles - including the small camping ones
Batteries - car and household
Liquids and wet concrete
Medical or clinical waste
Working through a whole house
If you’re facing the entire property rather than one room, a bit of order helps:
Start with the shed and garage
It's the least emotionally loaded, it's usually the highest volume, and it gives you a fast sense of progress.
Room by room after that,
Finishing each one before you move on. Half-cleared rooms are how a weekend job becomes a month.
Load the bin as you go
heavy and flat across the base. Level with the rim - anything above it can't be tarped and won't be collected.
Then the obvious rubbish across the house
Broken things, expired things, empty boxes. Don't make decisions yet - just remove what isn't a decision.
Leave the paperwork, photos and personal items until last
Where the bin will sit - driveway, yard, or road.
Deceased estates and downsizing
Clearing a parent’s house is not the same job as cleaning out a garage, and it usually takes longer than the family expects – particularly when someone’s flown in from interstate with a week to do it.
A few things that help: book the bin for longer than you think you need, so there’s no clock running while you’re going through photographs. Set aside a room for “not yet decided” rather than forcing every call on the day. And if there’s a specific date driving things – settlement, an auction, a return flight – tell us and we’ll work the delivery and pickup around it.
We can also do a drop and return rather than a straight seven days, if it’s easier to work across two weekends.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I get the bin?
Seven days is standard.
Do I need a permit?
Not if it’s on your driveway or in your yard. On the road or footpath, your council requires one – allow a few business days.
Can I get it delivered today?
Often, if you call before the cutoff. See same day skip bin hire.
What does it cost?
Depends on size and what’s going in. Full breakdown on our skip bin prices page.
What if the garden waste is separate?
Keep it separate and it’s cheaper – a clean green waste skip bin costs less than general waste for the same size.
